These pygmy hippos at Bristol Zoo Gardens are given the best possible care but in the wild their brothers and sisters are at risk of extinction.
The situation is so critical that fewer than 2,000 of these iconic animals are thought to survive in Liberia, Sierra Leonne and the West African Ivory Coast.
They have suffered from the destruction of forests by logging companies taking away their natural habitat.
They are classified as endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List.
So pygmy hippos like Sirana and her 18-month-old son Hugo at Bristol Zoo are precious.
And today (Feb 15) on International Hippo Day they are being celebrated all over the world.
