Aardman co-founder officially launches our new Wallace & Gromit trail

Aardman co-founder, David Sproxton, visited the Zoo today to celebrate the start of our new Wallace & Gromit trail.

Loveable pals Wallace and Gromit are the stars of a new trail which invites Zoo visitors to join them on ‘A Grand Day Out’ this summer, discovering what it takes to be a zookeeper.

It is part of Aardman’s 30th anniversary celebrations for Wallace & Gromit’s first adventure, ‘A Grand Day Out’.

The trail, which opens to the public tomorrow (Saturday, July 20), features the popular eccentric inventor and his trusted canine friend and aims to help children and grown-ups learn all about the most important jobs in the Zoo.

Also featuring on the trail is Feathers McGraw, the sinister penguin who caused the duo so much trouble in The Wrong Trousers. He will be hiding in different places around the Zoo and visitors will have to try to spot him before he gets up to any mischief.

The Wallace & Gromit trail will run throughout the summer until October 13.

Welcoming David Sproxton to Bristol Zoo, chief executive Dr Justin Morris said: “We are delighted to be offering our visitors this fantastic new trail, and we are thrilled that David has been able to join us today to enjoy the trail and help launch it.

“Everyone loves Wallace and Gromit and this trail offers a fascinating opportunity to find out more about the hard work that goes on here, and gives a flavour for what it takes to be a zookeeper.”

David Sproxton, co-founder of Aaardman, said: “With Wallace and Gromit in their 30th year of being in the public eye it’s only right that they should try their hand at something new and this time it’s being zoo-keepers.  Joining forces with Bristol Zoo they have decided to help families learn more about keeping animals in captivity and what they can do to help conserve nature at this critical time for the environment. Everyone is very excited about this project especially Feather’s McGraw who will also feature in the zoo trail. An experience not to be missed.”

The Wallace & Gromit trail will take visitors on a journey around the Zoo where they will find out how to formulate an animal diet, study animal behaviour, design an enclosure and much more. And there is a prize draw for a chance to win one of two Junior Zoo Keeper experiences plus goodie bags.

On six dates during this period there will also be special model-making workshops at the Zoo, for anyone aged five upwards, run by animators from Wallace & Gromit creators, Aardman. Participants will be able to make their own models of Gromit, Feathers McGraw or Shaun the Sheep, and meet expert model-makers who have worked on some of Aardman’s best-loved titles.

The Aardman model-making workshops will take place here at Bristol Zoo Gardens on July 29, August 5, August 16, August 27, September 28 and October 13 and advance booking is highly recommended.
