IT Project Manager

Contracted Hours: 37.5 hour per week

Salary: £30,000 - £35,000 per annum

Location: Bristol Zoo Gardens

Contract Type: 2 years fixed term contract

Bristol Zoological Society is world-famous. Established in 1835, the Society is a charity dedicated to saving wildlife together. We do this through conservation action and engaging people with the natural world.  We achieve our mission through operating two zoos, Bristol Zoo Gardens and Wild Place Project, engaging with visitors, delivering formal and informal education programmes, and through a series of science and field conservation programmes.

The Strategy to 2025 has recently been agreed with Trustees, which recognises the importance of developing a sustainable long-term future for Bristol Zoological Society. In particular the need for the investing in infrastructure, including a multi-channel admissions and customer management system and a new integrated finance system.

In order to realise this ambition, we are seeking an IT Project Manager who will be responsible for managing and supporting the delivery of these projects.  We are seeking a well-rounded individual who is able to bring together different departments and external suppliers to ensure we deliver the right solutions on a timely and cost effective manner.

Primary responsibility

The primary responsibilities of this role are to:

  • Lead system development projects including the formation and management of project teams, preparation and management of project budgets and overall project management to deliver systems solutions.
  • Manage all aspects and areas of the full project life cycle; Requirements; Specification; Architecture; Construction; Design; Testing ;Debugging; Deployment; Maintenance.
  • Work with stakeholders to fully understand their business plans, objectives and drivers and identify where systems and technology can help them improve their services.
  • Provide a proactive link between IT, internal departments and third parties to successfully deliver the appropriate systems, within the timescales and budgets agreed.
  • Map and analyse business processes, recommending improvements and advising on changes required to make best use of available technologies.
  • Support the internal teams with the transition of new systems, data and processes.
  • Provide and support workshops and training.
  • Evaluate project outcomes, measuring return on investment and benefits realisation.
  • Reporting to the Directors and Trustees on project progress.

Person Specification 

  • We are a charity with a small IT team so the successful candidate will needs to be hands on and willing to take on different roles to ensure successful delivery of the project.
  • We will expect excellent communication and organisations skills and a friendly and positive manner. 
  • Experience of delivery successful projects in a similar sized organisation.
  • We are a passionate organisation and we are looking for a candidate who understands and supports our aims as a charity.


  • Experience of customer facing system development projects, CRM and finance projects.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills, demonstrating an ability to identify and react to emerging issues and find technical solutions.
  • Reporting and database knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to manage conflict and maintain good relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Able to understand and explain technical information to internal colleagues.

Working Conditions

The hours for the post are 37.5 hours a week; however flexibility is required.

The post holder will be required to work any additional hours necessary to satisfactorily fulfil the responsibilities of the post.
